Keeping Germ Hotspots Clean

Germs are all around us, but there are a few simple steps you can take to stay healthy, writes naturopath Jodi van Dyk.

Kitchen

As your kitchen is where food preparation happens, food-born germs can easily be transmitted on unclean surfaces, glassware, cutlery and plates. Additionally, dirty hands can leave germs on the kitchen counter, as can sneezing, and these germs can be later picked up by other family members or work colleagues.

Bathroom

This is often a damp place that is an ideal breeding ground for bacteria. Washing your hands after you have been to the toilet is common sense, however it is most important in stopping the spread of germs – particularly for someone who is or may be infectious.

It is always important that both bathroom and kitchen surfaces remain clean and this is particularly true during times like flu season. There are many cleaning products on the market, but natural alternatives are less toxic than many disinfectants and bleaches – and may save you money in the long run. Try these essential oil blends (be sure to label the bottles that you mix these up in appropriately).

Bathroom Oil Blend

  • 1 ½ teaspoons lemon essential oil
  • 1 teaspoon bergamot essential oi
  • l 1 teaspoon pine essential oil
  • ½ teaspoon citronella essential oil
  • ½ teaspoon thyme essential oil
  • ½t teaspoon tea tree essential oil

Mix oils together in a 30 ml labelled dropper bottle. Shake well to blend and if possible leave for four days to synergise.
Encourage the family to spray the shower and air before leaving the room.

Bathroom Cleaner

  • ½ cup bicarbonate of soda
  • 2 litres hot water
  • 4 teaspoons vinegar
  • 3 teaspoons Bathroom Oil Blend
  • 4 teaspoons of cloudy ammonia

Mix together the bicarbonate of soda and hot water and allow to cool. Mix together the vinegar and Bathroom Oil Blend. Allow the oils to dissolve. Mix all together with ammonia then mix very well. Bottle and label clearly.

Ensure good health

During the flu season it is important to maintain a balanced whole food diet in order to keep your immune system healthy. Be sure to eat fresh fruits and vegetables, get plenty of fluids and steer clear of processed foods.;

Healthy hygiene habits

If you have a cold or flu flu, it’s important to prevent the spread of the virus to others. You can do this by:

  • Covering your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing
  • Discarding your tissues in a hygienic matter – throwing them away immediately then washing your hands
  • Washing your hands frequently
  • Avoiding touching your eyes, nose and mouth
