Did you know that?

Reducing your cholesterol level by 10% reduces your heart attack by 20%!

Blackmores SMARTHEART™ with OatWell™ has been clinically proven to reduce LDL cholesterol and regulate blood sugar levels by forming a dense and viscous gel in the small intestines.

Studies have shown that the results of cholesterol-lowering starts as soon as 4 weeks!

Clinically Proven To Reduce LDL (“Bad”) Cholesterol

Blackmores SMARTHEART™ reduces LDL cholesterol within 4 weeks in 2 ways:

a) Blocks the absorption of fats (cholesterol) from food
Blocks the absorption of fats

Blackmores SMARTHEART™ forms a dense and viscous gel in the small intestines and this prevents the digestion and absorption of fats (cholesterol).

b) Blocks the re-absorption of bile (digestive juice)
Blocks the re-absorption of bile

Blackmores SMARTHEART™ forms a viscous gel in the intestines and blocks the re-absorption of bile, forcing the body to remove cholesterol from the blood to produce more bile to digest fats. This reduces the LDL cholesterol in the blood.

Clinically Proven To Regulate Blood Sugar Levels

Regulate Blood Sugar LevelsOat beta glucan slows down the rise in the blood sugar level after a meal and delays the lowering of the blood sugar level to the pre-meal level. To be effective, 3 g of OatWell™ oat beta glucan must be taken daily.

a) Slows down the absorption of carbohydrates, preventing sudden spikes in blood sugar levels.

b) Consistent blood sugar levels will prevent excess blood sugar being converted and stored as body fat.

Regulate Blood Pressure

Beta glucan shows blood pressure lowering effects:

  • Daily consumption of oats-rich food was found to significantly reduce cardiovascular disease risk in the middle-aged people mainly through blood pressure-lowering mechanisms. (Tighe et al 2010).
  • In some clinical trials, it was found that patients consuming foods rich in oat beta glucan for 12 weeks experienced significant decrease in blood pressure. Results appear to show greater benefits for overweight or obese patients. (Maki et al 2007b and Pins et al 2002),

2 tablespoons of Blackmores SMARTHEART™ daily provides 3.1 grams of oat beta glucan to reduce cholesterol.

Additional Information

What is cholesterol?
Cholesterol is a type of lipid or fat that is found in the foods we eat and is also produced in the body by the liver.

Cholesterol functions in the body as a starting material for the production of bile salts and for steroid hormones such as testosterone, oestrogen and vitamin D. It also plays a vital role as part of the structure of cell membranes.

The good and the bad
Cholesterol is often spoken about in terms of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ cholesterol.

High-Density Lipoproteins (HDL): commonly referred to as ‘good’ cholesterol. HDLs pick up excess cholesterol in the body and transport it to the liver where it is readied for excretion, or to other areas of the body that are in need of cholesterol.

Low-Density Lipoproteins (LDL): commonly referred to as the ‘bad’ cholesterol. LDLs are the main transporters of cholesterol in the body, taking cholesterol from one part of the body to another. However, when we have too high a level of circulating LDL in the blood, it may lead to deposits of cholesterol in the arteries, thus increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease.

The Cholesterol Test
Cholesterol is measured by a blood test following a consultation with your healthcare professional.

A lipid profile test is usually taken, which looks at not only your total cholesterol, but also your LDL, HDL and triglycerides (a type of fat found in the blood).

Fats - sorting the good from the bad
To manage healthy cholesterol levels is not just a matter of taking fat out of the diet. It is actually about eating the right kinds of fats.

Good types of fats contain monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Polyunsaturated fatty acids include omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids.

Oily fish are a great dietary source of omega-3s. Choose fish such as salmon, mackerel, tuna and sardines. Don’t eat fish? Other sources include flaxseeds, walnuts, chia seeds and soybeans.

Polyunsaturated fats are found in plant foods especially nuts, seeds and cold pressed vegetable oils.

Decreasing your intake of saturated and trans fats may be an important part of maintaining healthy cholesterol levels as they increase your levels of LDL cholesterol. In additional, trans fats will also lower your level of “good” HDL cholesterol and increase the “bad” LDL cholesterol.

Saturated fats are found in fatty meats, full fat dairy products, processed foods and fatty deep fried take-away foods.

Trans fats are naturally occuring in small amounts in dairy foods, veal, beef, lamb and mutton. Synthetic trans fat may be found in processed foods, margarines, store bought baked goods and take-away meals.

When trying to manage your cholesterol, it is also important to make sure that you are eating adequate levels of fibre. Fibre rich foods include whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Fibre may help to decrease the absorption of cholesterol.

Of particular benefit is a soluble fibre called beta glucan which is found in oats and is throught to be responsible for their cholesterol lowering effects when consumed as part of a diet low in saturated fat.

Get moving and watch your waistline
Exercise and an active lifestyle are both essential for cholesterol management as they may help to increase your levels of HDL cholestrol.

Regular exercise will help to maintain a healthy cardiovascular system and maintain a healthy waistline.
