Yet more science is stacking up to support the benefits of lutein and zeaxanthin for protection against age-related macular degeneration.
Boosted intake of the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin may cut your risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) by 65 per cent, reports a new study from the University of Sydney and the University of Newcastle.
The research also noted the protective effects of zinc-rich foods, which they linked with a 44 per cent reduction in any type of AMD, and a 46 per cent reduction in early onset AMD.
Almost 2500 participants were examined for the study, published in the journal Ophthalmology.
As the article states: "In this population-based cohort study, the authors found that higher dietary intake of lutein and zeaxanthin may confer protection against long-term incident neovascular AMD or indistinct soft or reticular drusen and that zinc intake from diet and supplements combined may protect against early or any AMD. A high intake of vegetables also was protective for any AMD."
